Arjunan as the mandatory friend of the hero tries hard to tickle the funny bones and fails the majority of the time and Vidyulekha who makes a late entry adds to the torture.
Isha Talwar as Ayesha looks much, much older than the hero, thereby killing any chance of the romance working and even otherwise she fails to make any impact with. A better script could bring out the best in him as he surely does not lack talent.

Walter Phillips, who has played the role of junior Prabhu in ‘Unakkum Enakkum’ debuts as the hero and he seems to be full of energy and enthusiasm, but one has to say that instead of bringing his own to the character he mimics the template romantic heroes of Tamil films.
The rest of the over stretched story is how this Hindu boy finally gets the orthodox Muslim girl. Vinod meets Ayesha (Isha Talwar) in a wedding and as she falls from a staircase he falls head over heels in love. The SI gets interested and assures to help him if he tells him the truth and the flashback begins. The SI (Manoj K Jayan) probes the youth thinking that it is for political reasons as he belongs to a communist fringe group, but the boy tells that it is for the love of the daughter of Nasser’s brother Rahman(Thalaivasal Vijay). Vinod (Walter Phillips) a college student is arrested by the Kanyakumari police for trespassing on the house of a local Muslim politician Nasser.

Mithran Jawahar known for remakes has chosen Vineeth Srinivasan’s Malayalam sleeper hit ‘Thatthathin Marayathu’ as ‘Meendum Oru Kadhal Kathai’ which will surely force viewers to buy the DVDs or download the original film just to find out why it became a major hit. But its remake fails to touch an emotional chord.Whenever a super hit film from the neighboring states is remade in Tamil it is bound to be compared with the original. Thattathin Marayathu with its lyrical feel was like a beautiful love-poem on celluloid.
But apart from this scene and a couple of others, it’s a dry flat scenario throughout. The latter gets his space nearing the finale, where he breaks his silence and vents out his frustration. But her motions seem almost mechanical here.Īdequate support is lent by Manoj K Jayan as the cop who supports the cause of the lovers Nasser as Ayesha’s uncle and Thalaivasal Vijay as her hapless father. Vinod is a middle class youth from a Hindu background, poor in academics and not well versed in English. The couple-in-love is Vinod and Ayesha (Walter, Isha), both a study in contrast. But the film’s music is just about average here and more of a speed breaker. Also, a romantic musical depends to a large extent on its songs, which can carry the narration forward. While the director has followed the physicality of the script almost faithfully, the essence and feel seems to have been lost somewhere in its translation. This is Jawahar’s fourth ‘remake’ of another language film to Tamil. The film had its soul in the right place.Īnd now the Malayalam film is adapted to Tamil as Meendum Oru Kadhal Kathai. But what had made Thattathin Marayathu (2012) a fascinating watch was its engaging screenplay and it’s undercurrent soft emotional flow that touched a chord in the viewer.
